Plea for harmony

Published January 9, 2012

I VISITED Pakistan after a long time. I feel sad to see that Pakistanis are at each other’s throat. Just a few days ago I read in Dawn about demonstrations planned by some Shia and Sunni ulema. Do we know that we are not each other’s enemy? Our enemies are poverty, illiteracy and forces which are plundering the wealth of this nation. Also, our enemies are those who are outside our boundaries and using our differences to achieve their foreign policy goals. They are happy that by killing each other we are creating chaos, making ourselves weak and helping them unwittingly.

In this situation our Shia and Sunni ulema have a great responsibility. They should create harmony rather than hate. I am from Sunni sect and I wish I could walk with an alam in hand with my Shia brothers. Why Sunni ulema not join their Shia brothers. We are followers of Imam Hussain, the grandson of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him).

I suggest that Pakistanis just read Haaretz and Jerusalem Post and their shadow press in the West to understand the game of big powers. For God sake do not get into this trap and let them divide us.
