KARACHI, Jan 3: Bandits stormed into a jewellery shop in Shah Faisal Colony on Tuesday and walked off with over Rs5 million gold ornaments, police said.

They said that four bandits entered the New Khan Hazara Jewellers in Shah Faisal Colony No 1, held those present in the shop at gunpoint, collected gold ornaments and fled within 15 minutes.

The shopkeeper, Mushtaq Khan, claimed that gold ornaments worth over Rs5 million were taken away by the bandits.

SSP East Javed Odho said that though it was a small shop where such a quantity of jewellery could not be placed, the police would go by the shopkeeper’s claim.

He said that the shop had no security guard or any closed circuit television cameras.

A duty officer at the Shah Faisal police station said that there was some confusion about the transport used by the bandits. There were several vendors outside the shop, but they told the police that they did not see anything, he said.

He said that the jewellers told the police that the gold ornaments placed in the front showcase of the shop were taken away.

“Generally, jewellers keep original ornaments in lockers and display inexpensive imitations in showcases,” the duty officer said.

Following the incident, shopkeepers of the Sarafa Bazaar, or jewellers’ market, took to streets and protested over the daylight robbery. However, the police said they reached the scene, held talks with the protesters and controlled the situation.

Till late in the evening, no FIR pertaining to the robbery was lodged. The police said they were waiting for the shopkeeper to come up with a final estimate of losses.

‘Bandit’ killed in North Karachi A suspected bandit was killed by an occupant of a house where the former had entered for a robbery in North Karachi on Tuesday morning, police said.

They said the killing occurred within the remit of the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri after a suspect scaled into a house in Sector 1A-3.

The family members raised alarm on seeing the intruder. The head of the family, Muhammad Tufail, took out his licensed weapon and shot at the suspect.

Police found a pistol in the possession of the suspect, identified as Faisal and a resident of a shanty town in Khawaja Ajmair Nagri.

An FIR in connection with the incident was yet to be lodged till late in the evening.
