PESHAWAR, Dec 27: An intelligence officer and a police official were shot dead in two separate incidents in Peshawar and its suburbs on Tuesday.

An official of the Yakatoot police station said Siraj Khan, assistant director of the Intelligence Bureau, by killed by unidentified gunmen on the Dora Road as he was returning home after Isha (night) prayers.

He quoted the officer's relatives as saying that Mr Siraj had no enmity with anyone.

He said police registered an FIR against unidentified people on the complaint of Mr Siraj's relatives, adding that investigation into the killing was underway.

In another incident, the additional station house officer (SHO) of Badbher police station was gunned down on Tuesday as he patrolled Musazai area on the outskirts of Peshawar.

A police official said sub-inspector Mursaleen Khan and other personnel were fired at when they signaled two men riding a motorcycle to stop at around 11am.

He said the SHO suffered two bullet wounds in abdomen and was rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries. He said the two men, including the killer with a Kalashnikov, fled after firing.

Funeral prayers for SHO were later offered at the Malik Saad Khan Police Lines before his body was sent to his native Kalyat village in Charsadda for burial.

Another source in police blamed the fleeing of the killers on negligence of policemen accompanying SHO and said the personnel preferred saving their life instead of returning fire. He claimed that the killer had been identified and would be arrested shortly.

“We have begun search operation in the area and hope that the killer would be rounded up soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for police said SHO Mursaleen was a very bold officer, who was appointed constable in 1986 before being promoted to different ranks, including that of sub-inspector in 2008.
