PO killed in police encounter

TAXILA, Dec 25: A proclaimed offender (PO) wanted in a number of murder and abduction cases was shot dead in an encounter with police in village Buddo in the limits of Wah Cantonment police station on Saturday evening.

Naveed Ahmed, a resident of Abbottabad, who was a hired assassin, was wanted in a number of murder, attempted murder and abduction cases. On information that he was hiding in the house of an accomplice, a police party led by DSP Taxila circle Raja Taifoor Akhter raided the house. On seeing the police party, he opened fire which the police party retaliated.

During shootout, he received bullet injury and died on the spot. A woman was also injured in the cross fire.

Later, the dead and injured were taken to THQ hospital. Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, DSP Raja Taifoor Akhter said that the accused, a ring leader of inter-district gang of hired assassins, wanted in a number of cases.— Correspondent

6,548 FIRs registered this year

ISLAMABAD, Dec 25: The capital police have so far registered 6,548 first information reports (FIRs) in 2011 as compared to 6,480 FIRs registered in 2010.

The police claimed that difference was not due to increase in criminal incidents but due to the cases registered in 16 police stations after recovery of weapons, narcotics and arrest of the criminals.

SSP Muhammad Yousuf Malik divided the city into 44 beats and three security rings were established to control crimes. Despite these extra security measures, 115 murder cases and 320 attempt to murder cases were registered while 18 cases of robberies and 217 cases were registered for forcible snatching of items during 2011. Similarly, a total of 197 cases of burglaries were registered during the year.

According to police spokesman, around 14,721 alleged criminals including 400 proclaimed offenders, 1,050 court absconders, 1,632 gangsters, 267 gamblers were arrested in 2011 while recovery of Rs57 million was also made from the nabbed persons.— A Reporter

Drive against one-wheeling

RAWALPINDI, Dec 25: City Traffic Officer (CTO) Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Ghulam Abbas Tarar said city traffic police launched special drive against wheelie and made several arrangements to curb the activity.

He said the special squads of traffic officials deputed on the city roads were already checking the wheelie but now several other arrangements had also been made to curb the increasing trend of one-wheeling.

He said that city traffic police were taking stern action against the one-wheelers and the city roads especially the attractive areas for the activity were being covered.

Meanwhile, Senior Traffic Officer Syed Ishtiaq Shah said that city traffic police in the operation against one-wheeling arrested several youngsters last month while scores of others were fined particularly those who were found involved in rash and dangerous driving. — APP
