KARACHI: A man was killed and about a dozen people were injured in a clash between two groups during a Muharram-related procession taken out in Shah Faisal Colony on Wednesday.

“A man injured in the clash died in the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). The victim, yet to be identified, had sustained baton injuries,” said SSP-East Javed Odho.

Following the clash, tension spread in Shah Faisal Colony and there were also reports of firing at Numaish. To avert any further untoward incident, heavy contingents of police and Rangers were dispatched to Shah Faisal Colony and the Numaish area.

A traditional procession on the 25th of Muharram is taken out from the Husaini Mission Imambargah in Shah Faisal No 4, and it ends at Imambargah Karbala in Shah Faisal No 5.

“The procession had passed peacefully through the area. But trouble started when classes at the Jamia Farooqia ended, students came out of the seminary, and an altercation between the students and people from the Husaini Mission degenerated into a brawl during which batons and bricks were used by the two sides,” the SSP said.

The police said that the person who died at the hospital belonged to Jamia Farooqia.

Firing was also reported in the area during the clash. Police and Rangers who arrived at the spot were also pelted with rocks, police said.

The injured were taken to nearby private hospitals and the JPMC.

Afterwards the procession reached its destination and ended peacefully.
