LARKANA, Nov 27: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) observed the Chehlum of Begum Nusrat Bhutto at the Camp Office of the President House in Naudero on Sunday.

Quran Khawani was held and food was distributed.

Strict security measures had been taken for the occasion.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, General Secretary Jahangir Badar, Sanam Bhutto, MNA Faryal Talpur, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Minister for Law Maula Bakhsh Chandio, MNAs, MPAs and a large number of workers attended the event.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Sanam Bhutto, ministers, party workers and a large number of people visited Garhi Khuda Bakhsh and laid floral wreaths on the graves of Z.A Bhutto, Begum Nusrat, Benazir Bhutto, Mir Murtaza Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto and offered fateha.

Talking to journalists at the mausoleum, Mr Chandio paid tribute to Nusrat Bhutto and asked workers to follow the path of the Bhuttos who fought for the rights of the downtrodden and for democracy.

He said opposition leaders were unnecessarily criticising the government, adding that the PPP-led coalition would complete its term. He asserted that Imran Khan posed no threat to PPP.

People from different areas converged at the mausoleum and paid rich tribute to Bhuttos’ sacrifices for democracy.

Senator Dr Safdar Abbasi and his wife Naheed Khan also visited the graveyard. They laid floral wreaths at the graves and offered fateha.

Talking to journalists, Ms Khan said the PPP had the tradition of going out to masses but it was not so these days. She regretted what she called a small turnout of people on the day.

Paying tribute to Begum Nusrat Bhutto, she said a large public meting should have been organised for the day here like the ones held on the death anniversaries of Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Reacting to a recent Nato attack on a Pakistani checkpost and killings of soldiers, she said summoning the US ambassador to foreign office and registering protest were not enough. The government should take concrete steps to counter such attacks.

Had the government reacted effectively to drone attacks, such incidents would not have taken place, she said.

Senator Dr Safdar Abbasi said Begum Nusrat Bhutto was a brave lady who, after the execution of Z.A Bhutto, fought fearlessly against dictatorship. She stood out as an icon of democracy and a binding force among democratic elements. She remained unshaken in struggle for democracy, he said.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari visited Larkana city in a vehicle driven by Sindh Minister for Local Bodies Agha Siraj Durrani. He waved to the people from the vehicle.

People showered rose petals on his vehicle as a token of respect. He was later driven back to Naudero.
