PESHAWAR, Nov 19: Official summaries and briefs for the new chief minister and members of the new provincial government are being prepared in Urdu.

Official sources said that some of the provincial government departments had initiated the exercise to prepare Urdu version of the official briefs for the new chief minister.

The move was necessitated to explain the sitting provincial government’s policies and stand viz-a-viz several important issues — which had to be settled with the federal government — to the members of the new MMA-led government in the province and understand the technical issues in a simple way.

One such official brief, translated into Urdu, explained in detail the financial issues pertaining to the stand off between the sitting provincial government and Wapda over the issue of net hydel profit and matters concerning the current and new National Finance Commission (NFC).

The forming of the new provincial government by the MMA had put several provincial bureaucracy in a fix as they believed that the MMA members in the provincial assembly may find it difficult to run the government affairs properly.

“The English language could be an obstacle in understanding the issues,” said an official involved in preparing the Urdu version of an official brief.

Meanwhile, the MMA’s nominee for the post of NWFP chief minister, Akram Khan Durani, a graduate of law from Karachi had been extended security cover and protocol enjoyed by the chief minister and had started taking briefings by senior bureaucrats about the provincial government’s affairs.

Though the newly elected provincial assembly had not met even once and the new chief minister had not been elected, Mr Durani was reported to be in touch with the top bureaucrats of the province giving instructions and suggestions regarding official matters brought to his notice indirectly by independent quarters.
