RAWALPINDI, Nov 24: Three alleged killers sent to Adiala Jail on Thursday on judicial remand looked such a terror to the jail authorities that they refused to take them in.

Dawn learned that the local police had to use pressure to persuade them to hold the three, accused of killing three under-trial prisoners and a passerby in a shooting spree in the city courts compound on November 12, temporarily.

Sources said the jailer agreed reluctantly after police high-ups assured that the feared accused would be removed to Attock Jail within a few days.

Accused Khyzir Mehmood, Safeer Ahmad and Mohammad Asif were given chase and arrested as they fled after killing their under-trial enemies.

A magisterial court remanded them to police custody twice.

Police investigators produced them before an Anti Terrorism Court on Thursday, which ordered them to be kept in jail on judicial remand.

However, the Adiala Jail authorities considered it risky to take them in as they feared possible revenge attack by their rivals inside the jail and outside.

Meanwhile, police formally arrested Wajid Iqbal, a court official, for helping one of the three alleged killers, Khyzir Mehmood, gain entry into the guarded district courts complex.

Khyzir had named Wajid as his facilitator to police interrogators. Wajid's cell phone record and CCTV footage showing him bringing in Khyzir holding a bag on his motorcycle confirmed his statement. The bag contained four 9mm guns and a dagger.

However, the police took a week to formally charge Wajid, who served a female civil judge as Reader, that too after he made a confessional statement.

It seems the Inspector General of Police of Punjab ordered the arrest and legal proceedings against Wajid after going through the statement and the evidence.
