PESHAWAR, Nov 5: Heavy contingents of security personnel will be deployed at different bazaars and around the mosques to avoid any untoward incident on Eidul Azha.

Peshawar SSP (operations) Tahir Ayub told Dawn on Saturday that elaborate security arrangements had been made in Peshawar Cantonment, city and rural areas of the district. He said considerable deployment would be made in addition to the local police to deal with any eventuality. The cantonment circle SP Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed said a help centre had been established near Takhto Jumaat in Saddar Bazaar where police personnel, both male and female, would remain present to extend cooperation to the public in case of any problem.

“I cannot tell you the details but a reasonable number of police personnel have been deployed in uniform and in plainclothes to keep watch on movement of suspected people in the markets and on roads,” the SP said.

He said in consultation with the local business community the roads had been kept open for public convenience, adding the motorists could enter the Saddar Bazaar via Fakhr Alam Road near Green Marriage Hall and exit at Arbab Road. The U-turns have been blocked temporarily to avoid traffic congestion. The entry point at Stadium Chowk will also remain closed during Eidul Azha.

Similarly, the SP said several teams of bomb disposal unit would remain alert in the bazaars and shopping centres to act timely in case of any incident. Stringent security measures, he said, had also been taken in town areas and all the entry points along the tribal regions had been blocked to stop infiltration of miscreants from tribal areas.

The police, he said would continuously carry out patrolling to monitor the security arrangements and take prompt action in case of any problem. He said traffic police would also remain alert to regulate the traffic system at different points.
