ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: Former District Police Officer (DPO) Sialkot Waqar Chohan, who was sentenced in the lynching case of two brothers by an anti-terrorism court, has been transferred to the federal capital and is likely to be posted as senior superintendent of police security division; sources told Dawn on Monday.

Mr Chohan was sent to the capital police after Lahore High Court suspended his three sentences in the Sialkot lynching case on October 4.

The court also accepted his bail application after he furnished surety bounds worth Rs100,000.

The sources said SSP Chohan had been reverted to the rank of SP; however, after the suspension of his punishment, the authority concerned restored his previous rank.

The sources said Mr Chohan's father-in-law Rao Iqbal, a retired DIG, played an important role in his transfer to the capital police by using his contacts with the senior police officers in Islamabad.

Some months back, the capital police had sought the services of Mr Chohan from the establishment division to appoint him as the head of the security division.

Before this, former SSP security Ahsan Abbas was surrendered to the establishment division on the pretext that he was not following the orders of his seniors. The DIG security wing and SSP Abbas had severe differences over the strategy for security of VVIPs, VIPs, legislators and sensitive installations in the city.

Later, SSP Ahsan Saddique was appointed as SSP security but a few weeks ago he was promoted to the rank of DIG.

Besides, maneuvering to arrange official residence for Mr Chohan has also started and efforts are being made to give him the residence which has been under the use of his father-in-law for the last one decade, said the sources.

Mr Iqbal was allotted a house - 15-G, street 6 at Sector G-6/3 - when he served in the capital police in early 2000. However, he kept the house despite being transferred to other provinces by using his influence. During his last posting in Rawalpindi as CPO and RPO, the house also remained in his possession though the DIG Rawalpindi House was also under his use.

The DIG retired from government service on September 2, 2010, and was allowed to retain the house for six months till March 1. However, he has still not vacated the house.

The sources said SSP Chohan was still occupying a house in Rawalpindi which was allotted to him during his posting in the city.
