KALAYA, Oct 9: A coalmine worker was killed and another suffered injuries when unidentified attackers opened fire on them in the Doli area of Orakzai Agency on Sunday.

Sources said the workers were leaving the mines after finishing the work when they were intercepted by armed men, who wanted to rob them.

On resistance, the gunmen fired on the coalminers, killing one of them and injuring another. The victim was identified as Jahan Sardar, resident of Shangla district, while the injured was identified as Ibrahim Khan, also hailing from Shangla.

The armed men escaped from the area after the attack. The local tribesmen formed a volunteers group soon after the incident, who reached the spot, retrieved the body and shifted the injured to the hospital in Kalaya.

Residents said there were almost 270 coalmines working in the area. Such incidents have been frequently occurring due to lack of security for the mine workers. —Correspondent
