RAWALPINDI, Sept 30: A Rangers vehicle escorting Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry's convoy to Benazir Bhutto airport on Friday rammed into the concrete blocks as the driver lost control over it due to high speed. A Ranger lost his life in the accident while two others sustained injuries as the vehicle overturned after the mishap.

The accident occurred at around 4.15pm when the Rangers' vehicle left behind the convoy and the driver in a desperate attempt to rejoin the cavalcade sped his vehicle up and thus lost control over it.

Police said the vehicle was moving much higher than the speed limit and then flipped over on the road close to the airport after crashing into a concrete block placed in the middle of the road.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Syed Ishtiaq Hussain Shah when contacted said the CJ's vehicle was moving ahead of the Rangers' vehicle therefore, it reached the airport safely.

However, the victims were removed to the Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) but later two of the slightly injured Rangers were shifted to the Pims while the critically injured Ashiq Hussain, sepoy was removed to CMH Rawalpindi where he died later.

While quoting the statement of one of the survivors, the investigating officer said the vehicle driver Faisal Mehmood lost control over it when he applied brakes at a sharp curve close to the airport and then the vehicle crashed into the concrete block and overturned.

Five Rangers including Ashiq Hussain, Ghulam Rasool, Muhammad Ikhlaq, Hakim Ali and driver Faisal Mehmood were on board the vehicle T-939511.

According to the investigating officer, both the injured were in stable condition as Ghulam Rasool had suffered slight injury on his eye while Muhammad Ikhlaq had back pain.

The airport police registered a case and started investigation.
