Fireworks blast costs boy his fingers

GUJRANWALA, Nov 11: A minor boy lost his fingers while his three friend were injured while trying to ignite a fireworks in Garjakh on Monday.

Suleman Haider, Ali Shan, Raheel Ahmad and Sunny were attempting to ignite a fireworks in the middle of a road when it exploded.

They were taken to the DHQ Hospital where doctors had to amputate the fingers of Suleman.

The condition of the other three children was stated to be out of danger.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was killed when the string of a stray kite cut his throat here on Monday.

Zulfikar Ali had come to Gujranwala from Chishtian in search of a job. He was on his way on a motorcycle when the chemical-coated string of a stray kite cut his throat. He was taken to the civil hospital where he died after a few hours.

Teachers’ protest: The Punjab Professor and Lecturers Association and other organizations of teachers and students have protested against the provincial government for harassing them on various pretexts.

At a meeting held here on Monday under the chairmanship of PPLA president Prof Mahboob Ahmad, the participants said they would not allow the government or any other body to constitute boards of governors in educational institutions.

The meeting condemned the issuance of show-cause notices to the representatives of teacher organizations and manhandling of teachers in Lahore. It also demanded that all the arrested teachers should be released and the cases registered against them be withdrawn.

The meeting decided that the protest strike would continue till the acceptance of demands.

LOOTED: Dacoits looted the house of a doctor and took way a motorcycle from two passers-by in separate incidents in and around the city on Monday.

Five armed men forced their entry into the house of Dr Khalilur Rahman in Aroop village and fled after collecting Rs100,000 in cash, gold ornaments, two mobile phones, a gun and valuables.

Three robbers snatched Rs2,350 in cash and a motorcycle from Ishaq and Munir near Kot Khewan village.

Wahando police have registered a case.

POLICE CLAIM: The district police claim to have arrested 21 proclaimed offenders and 27 court fugitives and recovered looted goods and illicit arms from their possession.

The SSP said here on Monday that two stolen cars, four motorcycles, eight pistols, a carbine, five rifles, three guns, seven revolvers and 155 rounds were recovered from them.
