PESHAWAR, Nov 9: The Khyber Super Market — a residential area in the heart of Cantonment — has been turned into a garbage dump due to non-existence of waste collection points and making life deplorable for the residents.

The vicinity housing a big population, offices, restaurants and auto-mobile workshops wears a dirty look. The stink emanating from the heaps of filth lying all over the place has become a constant problem for the residents.

Its broken roads and streets paint a dismal picture as both sides of the roads remain littered with plastic bags, papers, kitchen-waste and sharp-waste.

As if it was not enough, some gypsy families have constructed open toilets which have further added to the miseries of the residents. These open toilets are contributing to air pollution.

The inmates of the locality used to dump solid waste on open spaces and low-lying sites, owing to non-availability of dust-bins. Residents have to dispose of waste in front of their apartments which are acting as breeding spots for mosquitoes, flies etc.

The Cantonment Board authorities have reserved a small piece of land for green belt, but some people are dumping building waste there also.

Mohammad Maqsood, a resident, complained that the Cantonment authorities did not pay attention to fulfil the inmates’ genuine demands and fail to provide basic amenities to them. He said, “I have never seen sanitation staff for the last one year”.

Residents informed that originally the Khyber Super Market was a residential area, but now the locality was being converted into commercial place and a number of auto-mobile workshops were established which have been playing havoc with the area.

They asked the authorities to take stock of the situation and install dust-bins at different points.
