SYDNEY, Sept 11: Australia demolished New Zealand by 24 points in Sydney on Sunday to complete a clean sweep in their Oceania men’s basketball series and qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Centre Aleks Maric scored 27 points as Australia raced to a 92-68 win over New Zealand to take the series 3-0.

Maric, 26, found good support from forward David Barlow with 17 points and guard Patty Mills (14 points, four assists, four rebounds).

While New Zealand have missed out on direct qualification for next year’s London Olympics, they have a second chance to qualify through a worldwide tournament.—AFP
