PESHAWAR, Nov 7: The city police on Thursday arrested 10 persons for allegedly selling petrol smuggled from Iran and seized thousands of litres.

Sources said the police had launched a drive against the illegal trade after receiving complaints from petrol pump-owners.

Nisar Khan, Ahmad Khan, Kali Shah and Zahoor were arrested at the Rashid Ghari locality when they were selling smuggled petrol on the roadside.

The Bhani Mari police raided some shops on the Kohat Road near Wakhko Pul, and arrested Hashim Ali, Farmanzeb and Mohammad Rafiq, and seized the smuggled petrol.

Zahoor was arrested near Darul Uloom Sarhad and a sizable quantity of petrol was recovered from his possession.

Names of the two accused could not be known.

The police have registered a case under Section 44 of the Petrol Act of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Besides, more than 1 million litre petrol is being smuggled daily from Afghanistan into the tribal areas and is being transported to various cities of the country.
