HYDERABAD, Nov 6: A prisoner of Tajik origin was murdered inside the central jail by an under-trial policeman, who was said to be suffering mental disorder.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad, son of Khan Mohammad Tajik.

He was sentenced to serve a 25-year imprisonment term by the district and sessions judge, Sanghar, after he was challaned by the police in a drug case.

According to the DIG Prisons, Nawaz Hussain, the deceased, was pounced upon by Fida Hussain, son of Mohammad Safar, on Monday.

The deceased suffered critical head injuries after Fida had thrown him to the ground.

He was initially treated in the jail hospital.

However, he was later taken to the neuro-surgical ward of the Liaquat University Hospital on the advice of the jail’s chief medical officer.

He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Since he was a convict, he was appointed as a Muqaddam (prisoners, who are appointed as supervisors or perform different work in the light of their good jail record).

He used to serve food, give medicines to the prisoners in the jail’s lunatic ward. He was also assigned the duty of changing their cloths.

According to one jail official, there are around 25 prisoners in the jail, who suffer from mental disorders.

The district and sessions judge, Hyderabad, Prakash Lal M. Ambwani, has been requested to order a judicial inquiry into the incident.
