ISLAMABAD, Nov 15: A properly-filled Nikahnama could prevent many unpleasant incidents of domestic violence in the society.

This was observed by the participants of an Islamabad Women Welfare Agency (IWWA) workshop here on Wednesday. The workshop was attended by 55 rural women, including housewives, teachers and students.

An IWWA official discussed the issues of domestic violence, divorce and Haq Mehr. The participants were also briefed on the procedure of filing an FIR.

“It is important to inform rural women about their rights,” the participants observed and added, “more workshops should be held to raise awareness on the socio-legal rights of women.

Most of the participants of the workshop claimed that they had gained confidence after participating in the workshop. They promised to work for women’s rights in their localities and make use of the knowledge gained in their homes.

The participants were divided into pairs. Each pair was supposed to ask three questions from each other and tell the rest of the participants answers to those questions.

Then the participants were divided in groups of five, given case studies on violence and asked to write answers to related questions.

The leader of the group gave a presentation.

The activity not only aimed at pointing out gender discrimination in the society but also at preparing the women, who mostly came from villages around Tarlai, to share any unpleasant experience with their mothers, sisters or friends.

The women, specially students, demanded that the boys and girls be given equal opportunities in all facets of life.
