PESHAWAR/SWABI, Aug 2: The police foiled on Tuesday two arms smuggling bids in Swabi and Peshawar districts and arrested three alleged smugglers.

A police spokesman said arms, including six Kalashnikovs like rifles, 14 pistols of different bores and 4,500 cartridges, were recovered from a car (Corolla HP-9403) on the Kohat road.

The official said the accused Mushtaq and Nawaz, belonging to Sheikh Mohammadi village of Badbher Peshawar, who were taking the arms from tribal area to Punjab, were arrested.

In the second incident, the Swabi district police intercepted a Rawalpindi-bound truck on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway, and recovered 15,000 cartridges, five Kalashnikovs and six pistols from the truck and impounded the vehicle.

Officials said a police patrol party signaled the truck to stop in Chota Lahor tehsil on the motorway but the driver sped away. But he was given a chase and apprehended. However the helper of the driver, Amrash Kha, escaped from the spot. A case was registered against Amrash Khan, who belonged to Peshawar.
