RAWALPINDI, July 7: A father ruthlessly stabbed to death his 11-month old son in Kalar Syedan on Thursday after he failed to convince estranged wife to return home, police said.

The father was arrested.

Police said Shoaib Ali came over to his in-laws' home to convince his wife, Rina Irum, to come back to home, and wished to see his son.

After holding eleven-month-old Shah Zaib in his arms, police said the father stabbed the infant, killing him instantly. Soon after marriage two years ago, Ali and Irum developed differences. After leaving her husband, Irum was living with her parents.

On Thursday, the father along with his relative Kazim came to Irum's parents' house. Police said as Shoaib was talking with Irum, he asked to see Zaib. Oblivious to what was going to happen, she handed over the infant to Ali, who took out a dagger and stabbed him.

Hearing the mother's screams, others in the home overpowered the father and handed him over to police.

The police investigating officer said the killer has confessed killing his infant son, who was buried in the local graveyard.
