ISLAMABAD, June 24: Explosives and hand grenades were recovered from the capital's fruit and vegetable market on Friday evening, sources in the police told Dawn .

The recovery was made from a car parked in the market shortly before the auction of vegetables was to take place in the open area.

The men in the market, known as Sabzi Mandi, spotted a Suzuki Khyber parked in the area reserved for the bidding of potatoes and onions. It was unusual as the place was not used for parking a vehicle.

After they failed to find the car's owner in and around Sabzi Mandi, the people sought the police's help.

The police along with sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. The car's scanning led to recovery of explosives and hand grenades.

The explosives were defused and the hand grenades were shifted to safer place.

The police impounded the car with number plate issued by Lahore's Excise and Taxation Department.

At the time of recovery of explosives and hand grenades, many bidders, labourers and other people were present in the market. There was no official word on the quantity of recovered explosives.
