LAHORE, Oct 26: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf chairman and MNA-elect from Mianwali Imran Khan insists on convening the National Assembly session at the earliest to end uncertainty and fuss in the national politics.

Manoeuvring for government formation is going on behind the scene instead of discussing the issue at the assembly floor as the delay in convening the session is causing rumours of imposition of martial law, he regretted.

The situation is also giving the establishment a chance to malign the politicians that they are unable to cope even with minor political crisis, he told Dawn on Saturday after a reception he held for the PTI candidates who contested election from Lahore.

The PTI chief, who had for the first time been elected a member of the National Assembly, stressed the need for forming a coalition/consensus government which was the only solution to the current split mandate.

“I had contested elections against these parties (the PML-Q, the PPP, etc.) but I suggest that they should join hands to form a stable government.”

He was critical of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal’s bid to field their candidate for prime minister’s slot. “What they will get by selling the idea of a minority government?” he questioned.

Lambasting the PML-Q, he said its every MNA-elect was manoeuvring to become prime minister.

About taking oath under the Legal Framework Order and making the amendments a part of the 1973 constitution, he said he believed that the MPs would take oath under the constitution and not the Legal Framework Order.

He said whatever the amendments introduced by Gen Pervez Musharraf would come before the parliament for discussion before making them part of the constitution.

“The parliament may trim the amendments like the 1985 assembly had done with the Eighth Amendment of Gen Ziaul Haq.”

Mr Khan said the issue of accepting a serving general as the president would also be taken up by the parliament.

He declined to reply when asked if he would vote against the general in case of voting on the issue in the House. “I’ll take a decision according to the need of the hour.” Meanwhile, a meeting of the losing candidates of the PTI held at the residence of Dr Usman Malik, a nominee from NA-127, discussed the causes of the party’s defeat on Oct 10.

Lack of resources coupled with weak organization were the main causes behind the routing of the party in the elections as the PTI could win only one NA seat.
