KARACHI, June 1: Former national football team coach Akhtar Mohiuddin has been hospitalised due to complications following an injury he received during the License-D course in Islamabad last month.

The Chaman-born Akhtar, who coached Pakistan in 2007 and then again in 2010, was brought by his family to Karachi by air after he was diagnosed by his doctors in Quetta as having innumerable problems.

“He had broken his Achilles Tendon while training coaches in Islamabad for which he was also operated upon in Quetta. But then he had an allergic reaction to a medicine that also affected his immune system and the doctors there advised that we get him better care in Karachi,” said his older brother Azhar Mohiuddin while speaking to Dawn on Wednesday.

“We brought him to a private hospital in Clifton after being ignored by the emergency staff at two major Karachi hospitals and the doctors here told us that he has some liver damage besides suffering from pneumonia,” he informed.

“Still, the doctors are optimistic about his condition and hope to see him make full recovery in a few days,” he added.

Akhtar has also coached the Afghan FC team and is currently the coach of the Faisalabad-based PMC Athletico team.
