ISLAMABAD, May 21: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has expressed surprise over the silence of judiciary and inaction by the federal government on the recent killing of five unarmed Chechens – three women and two men – allegedly by law-enforcement personnel in Quetta.

Calling it a “criminal act and a serious violation of all norms of decencies and humanity”, the Pakistan Muslim League-N leader in a statement on Saturday 'strongly castigated' those responsible for the 'inhuman incident'.

He expressed surprise that no concrete steps had been taken by the federal government or the higher judiciary to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Chaudhry Nisar said that he felt ashamed to call himself a citizen of a country in which such criminal acts took place in broad daylight in full glare of the media and “nobody from the government or judiciary raised a finger to check this murder of humanity”.

“The countries and societies which have no time for justice are wiped off from the face of the earth,” he said.

The PML-N leader said one never had “any trust in the Zardari-led government to take action in this regard but one at least expected the independent judiciary to exercise its suo motu powers so that the criminals are brought to justice”.

He said: “If this incident does not qualify to be taken up through suo motu action then I suggest the whole concept of taking suo motu actions should be revised.”

The opposition leader said that had such an incident taken place in some other democratic and civilised society it would have created an uncontrollable reaction and uproar. This criminal act, he said, must not go unpunished and the PML-N would continue to raise the issue consistently at all forums.
