LAHORE, May 10: An alleged robber was killed and three constables were injured in two crossfire incidents in the city on Tuesday.

In the first incident, an alleged robber was killed and a constable was injured during a crossfire between two robbers and four policemen in Muhammadpura locality of Factory Area after Fajr prayers.

A woman, her son and a paramedic were injured when one of the police constables who took their injured colleague to the Lahore General Hospital allegedly opened fire after a scuffle with a hospital clerk over delay in issuance of admission slip.

Police said constables Amjad, Basharat, Tariq and Waseem of the Mohafiz Force rushed to a street crime scene in Kot Lakhpat police precincts at 4:30am. They stopped the suspects riding a bike and captured one of them who was later identified as Umair. Umair’s accomplice fled toward the Factory Area after injuring one of the policemen. Two constables chased him and later shot him. He was identified as 38-year-old Naseer Ahmad.

Injured constable Amjad was taken to the Lahore General Hospital, where the policemen exchanged words with a clerk issuing admission slips.

A scuffle between the policemen and paramedics ensued after a gunfire, which left injured Bushra, her 15-year-old son Ahmad and dispenser Ishaq.

LGH Medical Superintendent Dr Zafar Ikram said firing by the policemen triggered panic at the health facility. He said the on-duty deputy medical superintendent had submitted his report on the incident to police authorities.

Model Town SP (Operations) Malik Awais said a pistol went off after falling on the ground during the scuffle between a police constable and a dispenser. He said constable Amjad was not treated immediately and this annoyed the policemen. In the second incident, two police constables and a shopper were injured when robbers opened fire on police during a shop robbery in Ichhra in the evening.

The Model Town SP (operations) said Mohafiz Force men rushed to Ichhra’s Super Market after receiving a call that robbers were looting a shop.

As police reached the scene, the robbers opened fire on the policemen. As a result, constables Rizwan and Aslam and customer Asif Bhatti were injured. The robbers fled, as police could not return the fire because of rush in the market.

The injured were admitted to the Services Hospital.
