Milk sellers defy govt orders, increase price

KARACHI, April 12: Fresh milk was sold at Rs66 a litre by dairy farmers on Tuesday against Rs60 fixed by the city district government Karachi though the authorities claimed to have charged more than 130 retailers for defying CDGK orders.

A statement issued by the CDGK said that a total of 134 retailers were found overcharging for milk and their goods were seized and charge sheets against them were submitted in court.

“Besides, city government staff also collected 138 samples of milk being sold in the market,” said the statement. “Some 16 of them were found of low quality. The dealers of low quality commodity have also been fined under the relevant rules.” It said at a meeting of the government had also decided to fix rates of vegetables, fruits and other household goods under the guidelines issues at a recent meeting presided over by Karachi administrator Fazal-ur-Rahman.

“The meeting also reviewed the proposal regarding fixed rates of 10 essential kitchen items that included several kinds of lentil. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Karachi Wholesalers Grocery Association, Retailers Grocery Association, Consumer Rights Council and Consumer Forum.”
