KARACHI, March 22: A young woman was axed to death on Tuesday allegedly by her father who was against her marrying a man of her own free will over two years ago, police said.

The police added that Gul Qambeer attacked his daughter, Husna, and her husband, Ashraf, after inviting them for reconciliation at his home in Qasba Colony near Chhanti Hotel within the remit of the Pirabad police station.

“The couple reached his home and they had more than an hour-long meeting, according to neighbours and some witnesses,” said an official at the Pirabad police station. “Gul Qambeer also offered them refreshment before whipping out an axe. He first attacked his son-in-law and after leaving him badly injured, he turned to his daughter.”

The couple sustained multiple axe wounds, the official said, adding that the suspect escaped after the attack.

“Both injured were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Husna who had suffered wounds in the head died while Ashraf is now out of danger after being operated upon,” the official said.

He quoted Ashraf as saying that he and his wife hailed from Shangla, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where they got married despite the disagreement showed by Husna's family. The official said the couple shifted to the metropolis after Ashraf got employment at an industrial unit.

Husna's father, meanwhile, chased them to Karachi and recently settled in Qasba Colony.

On Monday evening, he asked his daughter and son-in-law to visit him as he wanted to resolve the dispute, the official said.

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old woman was killed in firing allegedly by her son-in-law that also left her daughter and a neighbour wounded on Tuesday, police said.

The police added Hazrat Ali visited his mother-in-law's home near Haddi Mill in Landhi to see his estranged wife who had started living there.

“They had an hour-long altercation and finally the husband pulled out a pistol and opened fire,” said Quaidabad SHO Inspector Sajjad Haider. “The firing killed his 55-year-old mother-in-law, Zarin, and left his 27-year-old wife, Tasleem Akhtar, wounded. A woman who resided in the neighbouring house also sustained gunshot wounds.”

The victims were shifted to the JPMC for treatment.
