RAWALPINDI, Oct 12: The president of Pakistan Muslim League (Zia), Ijazul Haq, here on Saturday accused the government of rigging elections in a systematic way so as to get the results of its own choice.

Speaking at a press conference, he said his party was a victim of discrimination by the government throughout the electoral process, which started with the registration of contesting parties by the Election Commission.

The PML-Z was denied registration by the EC on technical grounds and was later registered it as a political entity eligible to contest elections on the instructions of Lahore High Court.

Mr Ijaz said he had expressed his reservations about the fairness of polls much before the start of electoral exercise. He said his opponent parties also conspired against him and published posters, which demoralised his voters.

Castigating the government for having been unable to take the political parties along with it during the past three years, he said, the government was taking the country towards instability.

“The present situation in which no party has been able to secure majority in the national assembly recalls the 1956 political scenario.”

About his future course of action, Mr Haq said, his party would support the political party in parliament which would work for national interests, serve masses and adopt a principled stance regarding the foreign policy.
