KARACHI, Feb 26: Two suspected carjackers were arrested following a shoot-out with the Darakhshan police near the Sea View area in the early hours of Saturday, police said.

A duty officer at the Darakhshan police station said that some time after midnight, a message was relayed on the police control about the snatching of a Suzuki Alto car bearing registration number AEK-493 in the Saddar area.

A police patrol finally spotted the car in Phase VIII near the Creek City, DHA and signalled the occupants of the car to stop.

However, seeing the police, two suspects stepped out of the vehicle and opened fire on the police, which returned fire. The two suspects sustained bullet wounds during the shoot-out and were arrested, said the duty officer.

The suspects were identified as Shahzad and Zeeshan. A TT pistol, a cellphone and the snatched car were recovered from them.

They were booked in a case (FIR 67/2011) by the Darakhshan police station. A separate case (FIR 68/2011) with regard to possessing an illicit weapon was also registered.

In Baldia Town, a young man allegedly committed suicide in his house on Saturday, police said.

They said that 27-year-old Tariq Ali ended his life by shooting himself to death with his own pistol. He was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
