KARACHI, Feb 7: Sindh Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed on Monday confirmed that 103 of the 2,536 people screened for hepatitis B in Gadap Town were found to be suffering from the disease.

Talking to the media, he said that six medical camps of the health department were presently functional in Gadap and Bin Qasim Towns to ascertain the exact status of the disease among the people of the area.He said that there were also cases where some patients tested negative during the Sindh Hepatitis Control Programme screening, but tested positive during the relevant tests at other labs.

Three of the six camps were established on Thursday after a reported outbreak of hepatitis B in certain parts of Gadap Town.

Three new camps at the Basic Health Unit in Haji Ahmed Khamiso Goth, Maternity Home Labour Square and Jam Karim Goth were established consequently to find area-wise spread of the virus and to help people in need.

The health minister who on Monday visited the camps in Gadap Town also heard public complaints. The people expressed their reservations about the performance of doctors and other healthcare providers working at the government hospitals in the area.

The minister assured them that more screening camps would be established to identify patients and provide them required medical treatment.

“Exact status of an individual would be ascertained through relevant diagnostics and those needed to be put on Inferon will be provided immediate support,” he said in reply to a question. —APP
