Rally against varsity ord today

Published October 4, 2002

LAHORE, Oct 3: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of teachers, doctors and students has announced that it will hold a rally from the MAO College to the Governor’s House on Friday (today) to protest the Model University Ordinance and constitution of board of governors in colleges and hospitals.

JAC chairman Nazim Hasnain said on Thursday the rally would be organized at any cost.

He said the protesters would remain peaceful until provoked by the government agencies themselves. Teachers and doctors also have the option to boycott the election duties, he added.

Mr Hasnain said 11 associations, including the Pakistan Medical Association and the Muttahida Tulaba Mahaz Pakistan have also announced that they would join the meeting and rally.

Meanwhile, JAC information secretary Raja Mahboob Husain said the government should stop recruiting teachers on ‘unjustified’ contract and give them regular appointments through the Punjab Public Service Commission.

He said teachers, doctors and students have also rejected the constitution of board of governors as it was a sort of privatization. —Reporter
