ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: The People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) candidate for NA-48, Dr Babar Awan, claimed that National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) had failed to deliver 80,000 national identity cards to the residents of Islamabad.

Speaking at various corner meetings here in G-7/2 and G-6, he called upon the Chief Election Commissioner to make sure the delivery of NID cards to all the applicants well before the polling day.

He said tall claims had been made by the government about the issuance of the new cards, and the equipment had also been acquired for this purpose, but all the claims proved futile. He pledged to make Islamabad a “city of education”.

Dr Tariq Fazal, the PML-N candidate for NA-49, while speaking at an election meeting in Shakaryal village said the publication of the confidential report of EU observers had “exposed all the evil intentions of the government”.

Expressing concern over recent killings of Christians in Karachi, he said the government had failed to control law and order situation.

Referring to the repeated increase in the tariff of utility services and prices of the petroleum products, he said the military government had augmented the sufferings of the people.

Allama Tahirul Qadri, the chairman of Pakistan Awami Tehrik, who came here in connection with the election campaign of his party’s candidates, also spoke at various meetings.

He pledged that his party, if voted to power, would ensure the supply of free of cost power and water to all the poor.

“Our country has huge resources and we can generate power without much ado, as nature has bestowed us with huge reserves of gas,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking at several corner meetings here on Wednesday, the MMA candidate for NA-48, Mian Muhammad Aslam, said majority of people in Islamabad wanted enforcement of Islamic laws.

Earlier, Jamat-i-Islami claimed that Malik Amjad Ali, who withdrew his nomination papers on September 15 after the refusal of ticket by the PML-Q, had in fact withdrawn his candidature in favour of MMA candidate.

A JI press release said the Islamabad Patriotic Alliance and the poultry association had also announced their support for Mian Muhammad Aslam.
