Shahbaz, Kulsoom to move SC today

Published October 2, 2002

LAHORE, Oct 1: Appeals for disqualified PML leaders Shahbaz Sharif and Kulsoom Nawaz would be filed in the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday, Sharifs’ counsel Ashtar Ausaf Ali told Dawn on Tuesday.

The Lahore High Court decision disqualifying Mr Shahbaz and Ms Kulsoom from contesting the elections would be challenged.

As disclosed by the petitioners’ counsel, the appeals were based on the fact that the written judgment had neither been announced by the election tribunal in an open court nor signed by the judges within the tribunal’s life-span and that “both the candidates had signed their nomination papers themselves”.

The counsel added that in the appeals, he had criticised the LHC observation that it was normal practice for judges to convey the verdict through court staff.

The LHC has already accepted the plea of Mr Shahbaz that he is not a defaulter, rejecting the election tribunal’s observation in this regard.
