RAWALPINDI, Jan 8: A traffic warden opened fire on a moving vehicle injuring a passenger after the driver of the Peshawar-bound wagon ignoring his signal to stop at Chorr in Westridge police area.

“The warden was apparently perturbed after the driver of the wagon did not follow his orders at the picket near Chistiabad on Peshawar Road and allegedly fired four shots on the vehicle injuring one of the passengers,” said Pervaiz Bundial, Superintendent of Police, Potohar division.

He denied reports that the warden, Faisal, was captured by the passengers and handed over the police. The SP said the warden fled after the incident.

Police said the warden signaled the driver of the wagon (LEX-6229) to stop but when he did not care the traffic official lost temper. The warden earlier had failed to stop two other passenger wagons, the police said.

The SP said the traffic police high-ups had been asked to force the warden to surrender to the investigators as the injured passenger, Ali Haider, had got an FIR registered against him. One of the bullets fired from the 30-bore pistol hit the passenger in the thigh, said the police.

“The warden has been suspended and further departmental action would be taken against him as he had illegally kept the pistol while performing official duty,” said Syed Ishtiaq Shah, the SP traffic.

He said the wardens were not allowed to keep arms, adding Faisal was carrying his own licensed pistol.
