KARACHI, Jan 8: The Maritime Security Agency arrested on Saturday 10 Indian fishermen for fishing in Pakistani waters, officials said.

They said the MSA also seized four boats carrying the fishermen, who were found 44 nautical miles inside Pakistan’s territorial limits.

“The Indian fishermen continue to intrude in Pakistan marine rich Indus delta region for poaching high-quality fish,” said an official, adding that the arrested fishermen were later handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal formalities.

The Docks police registered a case (FIR 2/2011) under Sections 3 and 4 of the Foreign Act against the Indian fishermen.

Last month the MSA arrested five Indian fishermen and their boat on the same grounds. The same month the Indian authorities released 52 Pakistani fishermen from their jails. The Pakistan government had earlier released around 500 Indian fishermen. More than 50 Pakistani fishermen are still said to be languishing in Indian jails on charges of violating the sea territorial limits.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
