QUETTA, Jan 4: Thirty-six women were killed in Balochistan in the name of honour in 2010, said a report issued by the provincial chapter of Aurat Foundation here on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference, the authors of the report, Ashfaq Mengal and Allauddin Khilji, said that 79 incidents of violence against women were reported during the year and FIRs were registered in all the cases, except three.

They said that two women were kidnapped, eight committed suicide and one was burned. There were four cases of domestic violence, six of rape, five of acid throwing and two others of torture.

Mr Mengal and Mr Khilji said the average for honour killing was 45.5 per cent, murders involving other issues 19 per cent, domestic violence five per cent, rape 7.5 per cent, suicide 10 per cent and other types of violence 2.5 per cent.

They claimed that there were fewer cases of crime against women last year as compared to 2009 and 2008.

According to the report, incidents of violence against women were reported from Chagai, Nushki, Loralai, Kalat, Bolan, Zhob, Jhal Magsi, Mastung, Nasirabad, Jaffarabad, Quetta, Khuzdar, Sibi and Qila Abdullah districts.?
