LAHORE, Nov 28: Celebrated singer Abida Parveen has been hospitalised after suffering a heart attack here on Sunday.

The singer, who earned fame by singing ghazals and Sufi poetry, was in Lahore to perform at a LUMS function.

She developed breathing problem during the function and was rushed to the National Hospital from where she was moved to the Doctor's Hospital where she underwent angioplasty.

The hospital management told Dawn the singer was first kept in the ICU and later, as she got better, was shifted to a private room.

Her condition is stated to be stable now. The doctors say the patient will be discharged from the hospital after four to five days.

Abida, a multilingual singer, sings in Urdu, Sindhi, Seraiki, Punjabi and Persian, and together with late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is considered one of the finest Sufi vocalists of the modern era.

She was bestowed upon President's Pride of Performance award in 1982 and Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2005.
