Six injured in baton-charge

SUKKUR, Sept 23: Six persons were injured when police baton- charged the participants of a protest rally, brought out against Hesco officials for issuing detection bills to residents of Ghotki.

Meanwhile, a partial shutter down strike was also observed on the call of the Citizen Action Committee against the officials of Hesco, Ghotki.

Hundreds of people gathered near the local press club and marched through main thoroughfares of the city.

When the rally reached near Rehmowali and tried to enter the Hesco office, the police baton-charged the protesters, injuring six persons.

Meanwhile, two women and a child were injured when they offered resistance to the irrigation officials during a drive against the encroachments on the land belonging to the department in Barrage colony, Sukkur.

The SDEO, Guddu Barrage, Sultan Ahmed Maher, along with a heavy contingent of police demolished several houses, hotels and other encroachments in Barrage Colony.

When they tried to demolish the house of one Din Mohammad Lashari, the women folk got furious and a scuffle broke out between the officials and the women, which resulted in injuries to Fatema, the wife of Mohammad Lashari, her daughter, Ghulam Zohra, and his son, Amir.

Later, some hundred employees of the irrigation department, staged a demonstration and a sit-in in front of the house of the chief engineer.
