PESHAWAR, Sept 23: A mobile squad of the Pishtakhara police station came under fire at the Ring Road late Saturday night.

Sources told Dawn on Sunday that the incident occurred at 11:30 pm on Saturday when eight armed men opened fire at a mobile squad patrolling the Ring Road near Pishtakhara. The squad retaliated but the attackers escaped.

ASI Sarir Khan received a bullet injury and was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. His condition is stable.

When contacted, the SP, Cantonment Circle, Khursheed Khan said the attackers were highwaymen. The cops had started patrolling the area after resuming the charge of the Pishtakhara police station.

The Frontier Corps personnel were guarding the police station and keeping a vigil for the last five days, following the shootout at a public protest against loadshedding.

Waqif Ali Bangash was appointed as deputy superintendent of the police and Jehanzeb Khan as the SHO of the Pishtakhara police station on demand of the jirga held at the residence of Town- III Nazim Yasin Khalil on Saturday evening and thus the police resumed the duty in the area.
