Governor to visit Bajaur Agency today

Published September 20, 2002

BAJAUR, Sept 19: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah will visit Bajaur Agency on Friday in an effort to pacify the tribal elders and take them into confidence with regard to the government’s reforms plan and holding of local government elections in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

Sources said the governor would address a Darbar of Maliks and tribal chiefs, and urge the people to allow the installation of electricity meters at their residences.

The elders of all the tribal agencies, who have rejected the reforms plan for Fata, have announced to launch a protest movement against the proposed holding of the local government elections in Fata. They have also threatened to launch a civil disobedience movement to press the government to abandon the plan.

Some elders, talking to Dawn on Thursday, said they had also decided to boycott the address by the governor to the Darbar.

According to sources, the political administration is making a last ditch effort to convince the tribal elders to end the boycott and attend the address of the governor.
