KARACHI, Oct 25: Pakistan's boxing coach Francisco Hernandez Roldan reckons the competition at the forthcoming Asian Games would be tough as compared to the Commonwealth Games, where two Pakistani pugilists clinched bronze medals.

“The draws are tough at the Asian Games as compared to the Commonwealth Games as Olympic medals-winning nations would be featuring in the Asian Games. Since the draws are tough, and so would be the chance to win medals in the event,” Francisco, from Cuba, said.

The coach insisted the Pakistani boxers were in dire need of international exposure, adding when they regularly faced world-class boxers at the international level, they would gain confidence and a subsequent betterment in their performance.

“International exposure is very important for Pakistani boxers. The talent is huge here. However, lack of international action here or abroad is wasting abundant of talent [which Pakistani boxers have],” he stated.

“I have seen many pugilists here who could have made their mark in the global arena, only if they were able to compete in international events,” the coach remarked.

Francisco further emphasised the Britain-born Pakistani boxer Haroon Khan and Mohammad Waseem, who clinched bronze medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, were highly talented.

“They could certainly have a chance to win medals at the Olympics only if they have proper training and coaching during the time left for the prestigious event.

“I have told the federation [Pakistan Boxing Federation] that I want to take the boys to Cuba for training and coaching for an extensive three-month period.

“I would be able to have them spar against top Cuban boxers and there would be a great deal to learn for the Pakistani boxers. These boxers may have facilities here. However, fighting against top-class pugilists will always have a privilege of learning and experiencing more about boxing.

“A boxer would not be able to know what the bouts at Olympics or other major events would be like, unless he faces those boxers who would qualify for the Olympics,” Francisco explained.—Agencies
