SRINAGAR, Sept 4: A political activist was shot dead in occupied Kashmir on Tuesday night and five others injured, police said.

The activist, a member of the Congress party, was shot dead by unidentified men in the highway township of Patan.

On Wednesday, five supporters of held Kashmir’s ruling National Conference who were putting up campaign posters were injured when three to four gunmen descended from nearby forests and opened fire.

It was the second incident of the kind this week. On Monday, a National Conference activist was injured when gunmen opened fire at a party rally in the Baramulla district.

Baramulla, Kupwara and three other districts head to the polls on Sept 16 in the first of four phases of voting for the held state’s assembly. The last round will be held on Oct 8.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference has called for a boycott of the elections.

In another incident, a policeman was killed and three other people injured on Tuesday night when Mujahideen ambushed their foot patrol in the village of Gogal, Kupwara district.

In a similar ambush by Mujahideen, an Indian army soldier was killed and another injured in Anantnag.

A civilian also died on Tuesday night as he strayed into the crossfire between Mujahideen and Indian forces in Budgam.

OMAR ABDULLAH: National Conference President Omar Abdullah filed his nomination papers on Wednesday for the state assembly elections as several thousand activists shouted their support, witnesses said.
