RAWALPINDI, Aug 28: The September polls in the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir is the continuation of “proxy politics” by the Indian government.

This was stated by the secretary-general of a London-based non-governmental organization - Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights, Dr Syed Nazir Gilani, at a “Meet the Press” programme of the Rawalpindi Press Club.

Mr Gilani said the coming elections neither could substitute the right of self-determination nor it would ensure expression of free will of the Kashmiri people.

Free and fair elections are impossible in the presence of the Indian security forces in Kashmir, he added. He asked the Kashmiri leaders to devise a plan to keep Sheikh Abdullah away from coming into power.

He said people of Kashmir needed political organization and emphasized that measures should be taken in light of the resolutions of United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan, the Tashkand Declaration, Shimla Agreement and Lahore Declaration.
