KARACHI, July 6 Regional Tax Office (RTO), Hyderabad, collected Rs17,813.99 million during fiscal year 2009-10, surpassing the budgetary target of Rs17,501.310 million by Rs312.69 million, according to provisional figures.

The RTO has collected Rs6,234.10 million on account of direct taxes. The revenue generated from sales tax stood at Rs10,656.6 million. Similarly, collections from the federal excise duty (FED) stood at around Rs923.29 million.

RTO Hyderabad chief commissioner Abdul Aziz Memon said that the revenue targets have been met due to effective monitoring of withholding taxes and efficient collection of arrears outstanding against different categories of taxpayers.

The recovery of arrears on direct taxes went up to Rs327.345 million as compared to Rs37.364 million showing an increase of 776 per cent over the last year.

The recovery of arrears from sales tax also registered an increase of 33 per cent and an amount of Rs266.225 million was recovered in this fiscal year.

The efforts for registering new taxpayers went a long way in making huge targets achievable as RTO booked 2,294 new taxpayers during the out-going fiscal in income tax and around 200 in sales tax.
