LAHORE, July 5 Four-year-old bay filly Tuba Show put up a splendid show in a late flash of speed to edge out filly Fly Away to win the Begum Manzoor Memorial Cup run over 1,200 metres during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday evening.
Ridden by jockey Aamir Pervez, Tuba Show took to the rails to cover the shortest route to victory while Fly Away went wide in the straight and then came back towards the rails to fight a neck-and-neck battle with Tuba Show who warded off her strong challenge to win by a short margin of a neck at the finishing line.
Filly Flying Fairy finished third, one and-a-half lengths further back while another filly Sweet Dream completed the frame. This was a class five event and an all-fillies race. The only colt contesting Pocket ran off the frame.
The feature race was sponsored by the Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman Tariq Aziz, who was at hand to give away the cup to winning owner Mian Hamid Mahmood.
A race later, bay colt Sakhi, made amends for his four successive defeats to win in a pillar-to-post style in the supporting and the last race of the day contested over 1,200 metres.
Enjoying the benefit of last-minute withdrawal of pre-race favourite filly Chomsky, Sakhi took the race-goers by surprise by an over a length success over chestnut colt Victory Star. Al Shams and Mirana Shaheen completed the frame among six runners.
Pole Star, a three-year-old chestnut colt, owned by Malik Hamid Ali Noon, won the second race at 20-100 favourite. Trained by Haji Abid Mahmood, Pole Star was astutely ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman to have a neck's verdict over bay filly, Imran Choice. Had not the colt been ridden by Shahid he would have lost the race. Bay horse Legend Sattar, also trained by Haji Abid Mahmood, finished third.
The third race was an interesting event in which unknown pedigree animals took part. Of the total six runners, five were backed for places. Running front at a fast pace, dark-bay horse Brave Heart, ridden by riding boy Sajjad Hussain, sprinted to a two-length victory over Jungle De Malka with Shahid Rehman in the saddle. Finance Minister and Silent Assassin completed the board.
Jockey M. Wasim Khan excelled among riders by bringing in three winners. He opened his account with a fluent win on 80-100 favourite filly Pretty Girl in the fourth race and went on to score his double by riding home dark-bay filly Zalzabeel in the following race. His third winner was Sakhi in the seventh and the last race.
Trainer Rashid Aziz sent out two winners - Brave Heart in the third race and Sakhi in the last race.
Three races were held in daylight while the remaining four were decided under floodlights.
