LAHORE, Aug 26: Wapda displayed excellent performance by winning 10 gold medals out of a total 11 to win the two-day 13th national karate championship which concluded at its own Sports Complex Sunday evening.

Wapda also clinched one bronze medal to make its point tally of 51.

Wapda’s Farman Ahmed and Babar Iqbal got gold medals in the 80 kg and above 80 kgs classes and were selected to represent Pakistan in the 14th Asian Games to be held in Busan, South Korea from Sept 30 to Oct 14. Farman had represented Pakistan in the eighth SAF Games in Nepal where he got a gold medal.

The other gold medalists of Wapda are Shah Muhammad (below 55 kgs), Shaukat Ali (below 60 kgs), Abdul Raziq (below 65 kgs), Agha Muhammad (below 70 kgs), Humayun Mustafa (below 75 kgs), Yasir Butt (Open weight), Ghulam Ali (individual kata). Wapda grabbed the 10th gold medal in the team kata.

Railways claimed the remaining one gold medal in the team kumite.

Police with four silvers and two bronze medals gained 14 points and secured the second position.

Railways with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals made 10 points and earned the third spot.

Besides Wapda, Police and Railways the teams from all the four provinces also took part in the championship.

Wapda chairman Lt. Gen (R) Zulifqar Ali Khan gave away the prizes.

Below 55 kgs: Shah Muhammad (Wapda), Adnan Akhund (Sindh), Amir Wasim (NWFP).

Below 60 kgs: Shaukat Ali (Wapda), Tanvir Ahmed (Punjab), Ghulam Muhammad (NWFP).

Below 65 kgs: Abdul Raziq (Wapda), Kamran Khan (Police), Muhammad Ramzan (Sindh).

Below 70 kgs: Agha Muhammad (Wapda), Ghazanfar Ali (Police), Aqil Ahmad (Railways).

Below 75 kgs: Humayun Mustafa (Wapda), Pervez Iqbal (Punjab), Imran Ahmad (Police).

Below 80 kgs: Farman Ahmed (Wapda), Majid Qureshi (Railways), S Amir Ali (Sindh).

Above 80 kgs: Babar Iqbal (Wapda), Irfan Afzal (Police), Majid Khan (NWFP).

Open weight: Yasir Butt (Wapda), Izhar Hassan (Sindh), Kamran Khan (Police).

Individual kata: Ghulam Ali (Wapda), Mehmoodul Hassan (Police), Ghulam Muhammad (NWFP).
