Hong, Zhou triumph

SINGAPORE, Aug 25: Chen Hong and Zhou Mi completed a Chinese double in the Singapore Open Sunday as they eased to respective victory in straight sets in the men’s and women’s singles.

All-England champion Chen outclassed local challenger Ronald Susilo 15-4, 15-1 in just 23 minutes while Zhou cruised through 11-6, 11-3 against compatriot and defending champion Zhang Ning in the women’s final.

Susilo, whose giant-killing feats in the earlier rounds made him a hero in Singapore, had become the first local player to reach the men’s final in the 12-year history of the event.

China were able to celebrate a third title on Sunday after the second-seeded pair of Huang Nanyan and Yang Wei beat South Korea’s Lee Hyo Jung and Hwang Yu Mi 11-1, 11-8 in the women’s doubles final.

In the men’s doubles final, England’s Flandi Limpele and Eng Hian beat Ha Tae Kwon and Kim Dong Moon of South Korea 15-8, 11-15, 17-14.

Men’s singles final: Chen Hong (China) beat Ronald Susilo (Singapore) 15-4, 15-1.

Men’s doubles final: Flandi Limpele/Eng Hian (Britain) beat 2-Ha Tae Kwon/Kim Dong Moon (South Korea) 15-8, 11-15, 17-14.

Women’s singles final: 2-Zhou Mi (China) beat 4-Zhang Ning (China) 11-6, 11-3.

Women’s doubles final: 2-Huang Nanyan/Yang Wei (China) beat Lee Hyo Jung/Hwang Yu Mi (South Korea) 11-1, 11-8.

Mixed doubles final: 1-Kim Dong Moon)/Ra Kyung Min (South Korea)) beat 2-Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms (Britain) 11-2, 13-10.—Reuters
