ISLAMABAD, Aug 24: Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) chairman Dr. Badaruddin Soomro has said forest cover is shrinking by 3.1 per cent annually.

He was participating in a tree plantation campaign, organized by the environment ministry in H-9 sector. The campaign has recently been launched by President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

According to a press release, the PARC and NARC scientists, officers and employees took part in the campaign.

Dr Soomro said there was only 5.2 per cent area under forests, which was not enough to meet environmental as well as socio-economic needs of the country.
