ACCRA, Aug 24: Playing the national anthem should be dignified and kept for “solemn and national occasions” Ghana’s media watchdog ruled Saturday after complaints that random playing sparked a coup alarm.

The National Media Commission (NMC) ruling followed anger over a radio presenter of an Accra FM station playing the anthem at random - spurring fears, since sudden playing of the national anthem often can herald a coup.

The country has a three-stanza anthem composed on independence from Britain in 1957. The original words were changed in the early 1980s during the government of former president Jerry Rawlings.—dpa
