LAHORE, Aug 23: Ravi Town councillors will elect new Nazim on Saturday (today) by casting votes at the polling station set up at the University of Engineering and Technology.

As many as 622 councillors of Ravi Town union councils will cast their votes from 8am to 5pm and results will be announced in the evening.

Though the elections were supposed to be on non-party basis, the PML’s Quiad-i-Azam and Nawaz factions and the PPP have fielded their candidates.

Qaiser Amin Butt has been nominated by the PML(QA) and is being backed by district Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood, who has been campaigning for him as well.

Mian Amer allocated around Rs10 million for development works on the recommendations of the councillors in Ravi Town during his tour of Shahdara on Thursday. He also solicited votes for Mr Butt during the tour.

Haji Muhammad Hanif has been nominated by the PML(N) whereas Arif Nasim Kashmiri is the PPP candidate.

The office of Ravi Town Nazim had fallen vacant following the murder of Aftab Asghar Dar in Naran on July 6. The councillors unanimously nominated union council Nazim Hashmat Ali Khan as acting Nazim for the interim period.
